What is the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association?

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association grew from a grassroots approach to a prepaid hospital plan in 1929. Today, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association is a national association of 34 independent, locally operated licensees, which collectively cover more than 109 million members in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.¹ The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association licensees, their affiliates, and subsidiaries cover 8.9 million people through Medicaid and 3.7 million individuals enrolled in Medicare Advantage.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association owns and manages the Blue Cross® and Blue Shield® trademarks and names in more than 170 countries around the world and grants licenses to independent companies to use the trademarks and names in exclusive geographic areas.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association licensees, including IBX (the Blue Cross licensee in Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania), provide health care coverage to members, allowing them to live free of worry and fear.
