Master of Public Health (MPH) Internship Program
The MPH Internship Program at Independence Blue Cross (IBX) is a unique graduate student opportunity designed to:
- Develop critical analysis, program evaluation and design, and strategic thinking skills
- Enable the application of academic skills in a real-world environment, putting theory into practice
- Offer exposure to a wide range of MPH careers with a specific focus on Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage). Selected applicants will be matched with a preceptor to work on a specific aspect of this Part D program evaluation. Learning objectives and deliverables will be outlined accordingly.
All internships are unpaid, temporary positions and selected interns are expected to be in the office at least once a week (between Tuesday-Thursday) to engage in mentorship and relationship-building with their preceptors and other MPH graduates working in Government Markets or other areas of IBX.
In Fall 2025, the MPH internship will involve a program evaluation of the Medicare Part D program, specifically focusing on Part D members currently prescribed GLP-1 medications (e.g., Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus).
- Interns will conduct a comprehensive analysis of IBX Part D members on GLP-1s, including an assessment of the ongoing use and effectiveness of the medications.
- Interns will be expected to provide valuable insights into treatment patterns, medication efficacy, and potential cost-saving opportunities for the member and/or health plan.
Program benefits
- Credit for a required externship or practice-based learning experience in an accredited local MPH program (specific deliverables are determined based on program requirements)
- Opportunity to work closely with subject matter experts across the Government Markets department, with the potential for cross-functional collaboration and networking with other areas as appropriate (e.g., Informatics for an epidemiology-focused intern)
- Meaningful learning opportunities in a fast-paced environment that serves the local community. Potential projects may include but are not limited to quantitative or qualitative data analysis; program evaluation; policy analysis and development; in-depth analyses of public health topics such as social determinants of health (SDOH), health disparities, or health equity; clinical quality measurement; and prescription drug utilization and outcomes.
